When we wear these plant dyed fibers they serve as a reminder of our connection with the plants. In this way we are wearing our medicine, our sacred medicine, that which empowers us to heal. These fibers carry the vibration and healing energy of the plants, a connection which is with us all the time. Farm Grown Color
Farm Grown Color is the practice of naturally dyeing fibers using plants that are organically grown on a farm or piece of land. The plants used for dyeing are cultivated, harvested, and processed on-site, connecting the land, the plants, and the craft in a sustainable, embodied way. This approach involves using plant-based dyes, rather than synthetic or chemical dyes, and emphasizes the deep relationship between the grower, the plants, and the land itself.
The term also speaks to the connection with nature and the traditional knowledge passed down through generations, which is rooted in the wisdom of working closely with the earth. Farm Grown Color represents a holistic process where the fiber itself carries the essence and energy of the plants, making it a product not just of beauty, but of healing and connection to the earth.
I have found great joy in the art of printing plants onto fiber, a process I call Botanical Printing, also known as Eco-printing. This process involves laying plants directly onto the fiber, rolling it up, and steaming it. The pigment from the plants is transferred to the fiber, creating unique designs that carry the essence of each plant.
This art form has been an endless source of inspiration for me, as the possibilities for designs and colors are truly limitless. There is a deep satisfaction in watching a plant’s image transfer to the fiber, revealing its natural beauty and spirit. Each piece is inspired by nature and captures a season in time.
