This is a three-day retreat for anyone curious about the magical instrument that is the handpan. No experience needed, just curiosity and openness to explore.
We'll gather for arrival and a welcome circle to settle in and get to know each other, with the first evening winding down into a sound bath/handpan performance.
At the heart of the weekend are the handpan workshops, designed to take you from first touch to playing together as a group.
Marina will guide us through the history of the handpan, tracing its evolution from its origins to the art form it is today.
We will learn how to approach the instrument and bring its sound to life through various techniques, starting with simple playing patterns, understanding rhythm and groove, applying chords to compositions, and building up to collaborative group play and improvisation. No prior musical experience is necessary.
Handpans are celebrated worldwide for their unique, magical sound and versatility, and each one is handmade. It takes a lot of time and energy to make this instrument, and as a result, the instruments are quite costly.
Throughout the workshops, we'll explore what makes these instruments so unique, and we'll also explore options for purchasing a quality handpan.
Instruments are provided throughout the weekend, though if you have your own D minor Celtic handpan, bring it along.
A few handpans will also be available for purchase, for anyone who falls in love with the instrument and wants to take one home.
Alongside the handpan, we'll have a Voice Journey workshop, a form of vocal exploration through somatic awareness, breath, sound, and voice, connecting us to the instrument within. No singing experience is needed, just a curiosity to explore your body as an instrument in a supportive space.
The weekend also includes personal time for rest, nature walks, or independent practice, a session of yoga set to live handpan music, and a closing circle to bring everything full circle before heading home.
Space is limited due to the number of instruments available, so registration is required.
